Sandoval legt Emotionen frei

Diese CD ist aufregend. "Action/Reaction" verspricht sie im Titel und im großartigen Cover-Design von Pär Wolfner - und hält ihr Versprechen mit jedem Akkord. Der Chilene René Sandoval hat um seinen Kontrabaß ein erlesenes Ensemble geschart, ihm acht eigene Stücke an die Hand gegeben, dazu Violeta Parras "Te quiero solo" als Verneigung vor seinem großen Landsmann Pablo Neruda, und in einer atemlosen Session ein Album aus einem Guß eingespielt. Sandoval hält sich dabei dezent im Hintergrund, gibt seinem Saxophonisten Fredrik Kronkvist, der eine Performance von Gnaden abliefert, absoluten Vortritt und stellt ihm Loïc Dequid am Klavier als kongenialen Begleiter an die Seite.

Vier hervorragende Könner sind am Werk, die einen inspirierten Progressive Jazz von hohem Rang vorstellen, sich auf den Bebop besinnen und gelegentlich auch einen melodischen Ausflug in den Hard Bop wagen. Alles gelingt. Sandovals seltene Soli wie in "Denchis Blues" sind wert, auf sie zu warten, Kronkvists Altsaxophon beherrscht die Szene souverän, Dequidts Eleganz besticht und Arnolds Drumset ist weit mehr als rhythmisches Rückgrat - hier spielt jeder für den anderen und alle zusammen für den hingerissenen Hörer. "Action/Reaction" legt Emotionen frei und trifft den Nerv. Faszinierend.

René Sandoval é un contrabbassista cileno finito in Svezia a suonare un jazz carico di umori hard bop e per niente latino, come ci si aspetterebbe considerando la sua origine. Il quartetto che presenta è multinazionale, con il giovane sax alto svedese Fredrik Kronkvist, il pianista francese Loic Dequidt e l´americano John Arnold alla batteria, musicista spesso di scena a Roma.

Quella che fanno è una musica diretta, senza mezzi termini, carica di energia vitale, appassionante, quel tipo di bop che richiede molte capacità tecniche ed una forte vitalità interiore per farlo suonare convincente.

Il sassofonista è già stato eletto "Newcomer of the Year" nel suo paese nel 2002, un biglietto di presentazione certo valido, ma ancora più validi sono gli assoli accorati, nella linea di un Kenny Garrett, con la passione che manca a tanti suoi coetanei.

Tutti comunque sono all´altezza del compito affidato dal leader, che spinge come un motore inesauribile tutto l´insieme, facendoci rendere conto che anche in Europa esistono gruppi in grando di suonare al livello degli americani su un tipo di linguaggio, il bop anni `60, che in fondo non è mai caduto di moda.

"Te quiero solo" è una ballad ed un omaggio all´autrice, Violeta Parra. Un attimo di quiete, prima di ripartire ad alta velocità lasciando dietro una scoria di fumo.

Un jazz, quello di Sandoval, che guarda alla sostanza più che alla forma e che decolla fin dalle prime note, convincente, definito, chiaro nelle sue premesse e negli svolgimenti. Ha poco senso paragonare il suo quartetto a quello di Coltrane o di altri noti musicisti degli anni `60: la loro musica è appassionata e quelle forme sono solo un modo di porre in note un`esuberante espressività

All About Jazz about Action /Reaction

This second release from the new Swedish Lovestreet Records label gives us another portion of good Malmö-based acoustic jazz. But this band is not exactly local—the bandleader/composer is Chilean, pianist Loïc Dequidt is French, and drummer John Arnold is American. Only saxophonist Fredrik Kronkvist has his roots in southern Sweden. This quartet is deeply rooted in the mainstream tradition of that quartet with a capital Q headed by the capital JC himself, although this one features an alto player inspired by Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Garrett.

But what first attracts attention are the interesting, well-written compositions and the alert drumming. John Arnold bounces around and adds interesting markings wherever he has the opportunity, with a distinct attack, excellent presence, and dynamics which might inspire some of his more cool-tempered Swedish colleagues. René Sandoval has chosen a drummer that fits well with his own style of bass playing, which provides both a steady backbone and nice melodic qualities.

Pianist Loïc Dequidt surprises with a tonal world beyond the ordinary, often keeping busy with interesting cascades of notes somewhere under the surface. For example, after the piano solo on “Try Me,” when the sax returns to the theme, Dequidt is still flying around like a joyful bird. The young altoist Fredrik Kronkvist does not vary his tone and phrasing much, but he's quite inventive melodically, constantly going out on new adventures. His notes pour out of the saxophone without any trace of hesitation.

With all the compositions but one from his own pen, René Sandoval shows a high level of musical maturity; he does not need to prove his virtuosity. He takes a few solos, otherwise focusing on the drive and the interplay with his band, adding plenty of extra swing. He sticks to what a bass player should always do—he carries the music on his shoulders. And fingers.
